This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I came into this hoping for at least a commentary on human society as a whole and our natural flaws。 Mo Willems is one of my favorite authors simply for his deeper meanings and insightful characters。 However, this book is just not it! Although the characters are deeply fleshed out and truly have given me insight into my own life, it just isn't up to the standards of Willems and 2021。 2/5, would not recommend。 I came into this hoping for at least a commentary on human society as a whole and our natural flaws。 Mo Willems is one of my favorite authors simply for his deeper meanings and insightful characters。 However, this book is just not it! Another adventure of Elephant (Gerald) and Piggie! Follow along as Gerald tells his story about balancing his hippo and rhino friends on his trunk。 After his balancing act, Gerald trips and breaks his trunk as he runs to his best friend, Piggie! I really enjoyed this book and so did the kindergartener's! We used it for a mini-lesson during Writer's Workshop and they giggled at Piggie and Gerald's accidents。 This would be a great book for children 5-7。 Diversity: There were no diverse characters。 Another adventure of Elephant (Gerald) and Piggie! Mo Willems has done it again by subverting our expectations!!! Just when you think you will find out how Gerald broke his trunk, something else crazy happens in the story he is retelling, and then we find out Gerald broke his trunk in the most mundane way!!!! Then repeat。 (view spoiler)[ This sequence of events seems to be the formula for the plot in many of Mo Willems stories as at the very end of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus”, Pigeon finds another vehicle 🚒 that he wants to drive! This book involves Gerald, the elephant, telling his best friend, Piggie, about how he broke his trunk。 Gerald, however, cannot seem to get to the point of how he actually broke his trunk while he is telling Piggie the story。 He says that he decides to balance his friend, hippo on his trunk, and then goes through other animals and things that he balanced on his trunk as well。 This leads the reader to think that Gerald broke his trunk by balancing too many animals and things on his trunk。 However This book involves Gerald, the elephant, telling his best friend, Piggie, about how he broke his trunk。 Gerald, however, cannot seem to get to the point of how he actually broke his trunk while he is telling Piggie the story。 He says that he decides to balance his friend, hippo on his trunk, and then goes through other animals and things that he balanced on his trunk as well。 This leads the reader to think that Gerald broke his trunk by balancing too many animals and things on his trunk。 However, when Gerald finally gets to the real reason as to how he broke his trunk, he reveals that he actually broke it from accidentally tripping and falling onto it while on his way to tell Pigge about what he did。 Piggie, then, decides to go tell her friend, squirrel, about this incident but, ends up tripping and falling just like Gerald, while on her way to tell him。 When she gets to squirrel, he asks her what happened and she replied with "It's a long story。" This is such a fun book that I think would be great to read aloud to early elementary age students, whom I think would enjoy this book。 It is easy to understand and contains simple illustrations, with just the characters being portrayed with the white background of the page, so younger readers would not get overwhelmed with too much information。 。。。more

Gerald breaks his trunk, and tells Piggie all about it in one very long and very silly story。

Know a small person who broke or fractured part of themselves? This sweet and funny tale should cheer them up!!

This book is hilarious, whether you are an adult or a child。 Mo Willems masters both suspense and exasperation with his illustrations。 In the story, Gerald the elephant tells a long and increasingly improbable story about the way he broke his trunk, while Piggie listens intently and even comments to the reader about the story。

Meredith

Gerald recounts how he injured his trunk。This beginning reader tells a funny story using simple vocabulary, sight words, and an easy to follow plot。

I think it was funny because pig thought, "Why did I never see Gerald today?" and then she said, "Gerald, what happened to your trunk?" I like those parts。 I can read it。 *begins reading (reciting) the words of the book, but sometimes on the wrong page* I think it was funny because pig thought, "Why did I never see Gerald today?" and then she said, "Gerald, what happened to your trunk?" I found this book to be humorous and had a a few interesting tactics such as the character speaking directly to the reader, and the repetition throughout the story, but I felt that the images were lacking excitement and detail。 Even for young readers, a story that is being built in front to their eyes should have more to the imagery being put into it。

I love this series, there always so cute and tell a funny and adventurous story。 We got this one for my autistic brother when he broke his arm。 He loved reading it with my mom, and I think he felt a lot better after reading it。 It’s a really cute story about Gerald telling Piggy about how many animals he could hold on his trunk。 I highly recommend this book and all the other elephant and piggy books。

Lynda

I love piggy’s expressions! This is a funny book that made us laugh a lot! Yup! It’s a crazy long story。

This would be a great book for children who are just learning to read。 Within this book, there are not many words but I thought the story was humorous and kids would die laughing reading it。 This book made me giggle and I am 19 years old。 The author using illustrations that convey exactly what the characters are feeling without needing words, this helps the reading process for younger children I'm sure。 I don't think this book would be good to read to an entire class however after reading this o This would be a great book for children who are just learning to read。 Within this book, there are not many words but I thought the story was humorous and kids would die laughing reading it。 This book made me giggle and I am 19 years old。 The author using illustrations that convey exactly what the characters are feeling without needing words, this helps the reading process for younger children I'm sure。 I don't think this book would be good to read to an entire class however after reading this one on one with a child who is just learning to read they should then be able to read it by themselves。 。。。more
